Elizabeth Silis, 83

She was born in 1941 in Mexico, where her journey through life began with resilience and strength. In 1966, she moved to Puerto Rico in search of new opportunities, where she worked diligently cleaning houses and generously devoted her time to helping children with their education. During her time in Puerto Rico, she was lovingly welcomed by a family who supported her in becoming a U.S. citizen—an act of kindness and unity she cherished deeply. After five years of building a life there, she bravely took her next step, traveling by plane from Puerto Rico to Miami, and then on to Chicago, Illinois in 1971, where she continued her journey with unwavering determination and love. In 1982, she welcomed her greatest joy, her son Gustavo. Her life was further blessed when she became a grandmother—first in 2005 with the birth of Keila, and again in 2009 with the arrival of Bianca. Becoming a grandmother brought her immense pride and happiness, and she cherished every moment spent with her beloved grandchildren.
She found simple joys in the rhythm of city life and the beauty of nature. She especially loved the Chicago snow—playing in it, watching it fall, and sharing those magical moments with her family. One of her favorite things to do was take her oldest granddaughter, Keila, on the bus and train, exploring the city together. She also enjoyed traveling alone, often riding the Red Line from Evanston all the way to 95th Street, finding peace and independence in those quiet journeys. She had a profound impact on the lives of many school-aged children, always willing to help with homework, offer encouragement, and nurture a love for learning. Her patience and kindness left a lasting legacy in the hearts of many young minds she touched. In 1994, she made a deeply meaningful spiritual decision and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Her faith became a guiding force in her life, giving her strength, comfort, and a close relationship with her Creator. Her life was also a testament to strength and survival. She overcame two devastating house fires—one in 2003 in Chicago’s Wrigleyville neighborhood, and another in 2022 in Albany Park, where she lost all of her belongings. Even in the face of loss, she remained resilient, never allowing hardship to diminish her spirit or generosity.
Elizabeth was the loving mother of Gustavo Pizano. Proud grandmother of Keila Pizano Bianca Pizano. Cherished sister of Eliva Silis and Adriana Silis. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents Carlos Silis and the late Leonor Hernández.

Elizabeth Silis nació en 1941 en México, donde comenzó su camino por la vida con resiliencia y fortaleza. En 1966, se mudó a Puerto Rico en busca de nuevas oportunidades, donde trabajó con dedicación limpiando casas y generosamente dedicó su tiempo a ayudar a los niños con su educación. En 1982, recibió su mayor alegría: el nacimiento de su hijo Gustavo. Su vida fue aún más bendecida cuando se convirtió en abuela—primero en 2005 con el nacimiento de Keila, y nuevamente en 2009 con la llegada de Bianca. Ser abuela le dio un inmenso orgullo y felicidad, y atesoró cada momento compartido con sus queridas nietas.

Le encantaba especialmente la nieve de Chicago—jugar en ella, verla caer y compartir esos momentos mágicos con su familia. Una de sus actividades favoritas era llevar a su nieta mayor, Keila, en el autobús y el tren, explorando juntas la ciudad. También disfrutaba viajar sola, recorriendo con frecuencia la Línea Roja desde Evanston hasta la calle 95, encontrando paz e independencia en esos tranquilos trayectos.

Tuvo un impacto profundo en la vida de muchos niños en edad escolar, siempre dispuesta a ayudar con las tareas, ofrecer palabras de aliento y fomentar el amor por el aprendizaje. Su paciencia y amabilidad dejaron un legado duradero en los corazones de muchas mentes jóvenes a las que tocó.

En 1994, tomó una decisión espiritual profundamente significativa y se bautizó como testigo de Jehová. Su fe se convirtió en una fuerza guía en su vida, dándole fortaleza, consuelo y una estrecha relación con su Creador.

Su vida también fue un testimonio de fortaleza y supervivencia. Superó dos incendios devastadores—uno en 2003 en el vecindario de Wrigleyville en Chicago, y otro en 2022 en Albany Park, donde perdió todas sus pertenencias. Incluso frente a la pérdida, se mantuvo resiliente, sin permitir que las dificultades apagaran su espíritu ni su generosidad.
