Alexis Serrano, “Alex”, 28, of Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood, passed away surrounded by the love of family, one week after an unexpected cardiac event.

Born in Chicago, Alex graduated from Amundsen High School. Along the way, he did construction, demo, roofing, and warehouse work, but his true talent and enjoyment was in the restaurant industry. He attended culinary school for two years and began his career as a busboy at Pompei a popular restaurant near Illinois Masonic Hospital. After witnessing his older brother work the food line, Alex pursued a position as a line cook at various fine dining restaurants including Maple & Ash. He followed his brother to Gilt Bar six months ago and was quickly promoted from busser to bar back, with his sights set on a bartending position.

He was a very hard worker, committed to doing an excellent job. He was always a student and loved to learn. Alex assured his family “I may not finish school, but I’m going to do everything else well."

Alex loved mescal and heavy metal and banda music, particularly “Fuerza Regida”. He was proud of his Mexican roots and often sported a tejana and cowboy boots and rode his bike with a Mexican flag as a cape. Although he is also remembered by his family as the cousin who did Michael Jackson impressions at family parties, glove and all. He played football, basketball, and soccer and rooted for the Chicago Cubs and the New England Patriots.

Alex was always smiling and joking; he really just wanted to be cool with everyone. He loved his family and his friends. He was a mama’s boy and also her right-hand man. Maria called him her “cocodrilo”, inspired by the silver teeth he wore as a younger man.

Above all, Alexis loved his motorcycle. He lived for speed, much to the displeasure of his family. But it was his outlet, where he found freedom. He lived his life in fourth gear and even sported a tattoo “4” to represent his riding group. He always told his family he expected to die in a motorcycle accident. Nobody anticipated this particular ending and our family will never be the same.

Devoted son of Maria Reyna Serrano and Jose Guerrero. Loving brother of Eduardo Murillo, Samantha Serrano, Elisha Guerrero, and Leslie and Wendolyn. Dear uncle of Nathan, Sophia, Julissa, Jayden, and James, Anastasia, Chris, Vinny, Vida, Regina, and Julian. Nephew of Angel, Felipe (Elvia), Miguel (Maria), Alicia (Fernando), Lilia (Jose), Eloisa (Tony), Ruben, Julieta (Vidal), and Edgar (Gabby).

Loving cousin of Steve, Gus, Diego, Josh, Alberto, Jonathan, Jocelyn, Nicole, Frank, Stephanie, Jimmy, Ckorina, Matthew, Joam, Migue, Vidal Jr., Fernando, and Israel.

He is also deeply missed by his loving partner of two years, Yessenia Marin, his dear friends Julio Padilla and Johnny Jimenez, and his riding partners Tristan Anderson and JoJo, with whom he would traverse the city, north to south.

Faithful companion of Rocky the Doberman Pinscher.

Alexis was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Francisco and Natividad Serrano and uncles Conrado and Gustavo “Gus”. In a strange coincidence, Gus, who also rode motorcycles, also died at the age of 28 on September 5, just 26 years earlier.

He is welcomed into heaven by many infant angels, including his brother Carlos Serrano, and nieces and nephews Noah, Violet, Rain, Francisco, Kora, and Naty.

Visitation Wednesday, September 10, 3-9pm at Midtown Funeral Home, 3918 W. Irving Park Rd., Chicago, 60618. Another visitation will be held 10am (mass begins 11am) on Thursday September 11 at St. Padre Pio Parish at the Church of St. Hilary, 5601 N California Ave., Chicago, IL 60659.

The family has chosen private green cremation.

Alexis Serrano, "Alex", de 28 años y residente del barrio Lincoln Square de Chicago, falleció rodeado del cariño de su familia una semana después de un inesperado evento cardíaco.

Nacido en Chicago, Alex se graduó de la escuela secundaria Amundsen. Durante su trayectoria, trabajó en construcción, demolición, techado y almacén, pero su verdadero talento y disfrute residía en la industria restaurantera. Asistió a la escuela culinaria durante dos años y comenzó su carrera como ayudante de camarero en Pompei, un popular restaurante cerca del Hospital Masónico de Illinois. Tras ver a su hermano mayor trabajar en la línea de comida, Alex buscó un puesto como cocinero en varios restaurantes de alta cocina, incluyendo Maple & Ash. Por encima de todo, Alexis amaba su motocicleta. Vivía para la velocidad, para disgusto de su familia. Pero era su válvula de escape, donde encontraba la libertad.
