OBITUARY

In Loving Memory of
Thinh Phuoc Nguyen
April 5, 1965 – July 17, 2026

Thinh Phuoc Nguyen, age 61, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2026, in Chicago, Illinois. After immigrating to the United States, Thinh built a vibrant life centered around love, hard work, and complete devotion to his family and friends. He was a cherished
husband, a loving father, a devoted brother, an amazing uncle, and a loyal friend who brought immense warmth, humor, and kindness to everyone he met.
He was a deeply selfless man with a pure compassion for people. Always positive and intentional, he loved bringing people together and carried a contagious smile. He constantly went out of his way to serve others, making everyone feel welcomed, deeply valued, and like family. He truly believed in the goodness of people, looking for the best in them and encouraging everyone to live life to the fullest. He was many things to many people, but to truly know who he was, one only has to look at the legacy he leaves behind - in the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love that continues to live on through all of us.
He is survived by his loving wife Nga Nguyen, his daughter MyHien, and a large network of deeply devoted extended family and friends who will carry his memory forward.

I had the blessing to work with Thinh as a testing engineer for the CTA. He truly was the best of what it meant to be a testing engineer and none of bad. My experience with him was he always solved the problems assigned to him AND, and this was the part of Thinh I admired the most, he did so with absolutely no ego or braggadocio. He just got it done and moved on to the next thing with a positive attitude. I also know of him that he was a really good soccer player and an excellent athlete. We both like to study martial arts and he was a better martial artist than me. We lost touch after I moved to another department but I will always remember his lessons of working hard, staying positive and counting blessing. RIP Thinh.

Twenty-six years working together went by in the blink of an eye, from the substations supplying power to the rail lines, to walking along the tracks to set up RTU systems to monitor the trains, to the subway tunnels where we converted the outdated Supervisory system to SCADA... there are so many memories, aren't there, Thịnh? The name Chicago Transit Authority became deeply tied to our lives, helping us, Vietnamese living in America, serve our community.

On the drive home from the hospital while waiting for the test results, you talked to me so much, about everything from Vietnam to work... I never imagined those would be your final words to me.

There are roads that have no destination, but the journey of a human life must eventually reach its end, shouldn't it, Thịnh? When I received Joe’s text with the news, "Thịnh passed away 1 hour ago," I froze in place. An empty void enveloped everything. Is this the impermanence of human life?

I knew you and your wife before you were married; you two wed, had a child, and now you have left so suddenly. Nga and little Hiền will be left so lonely. Nga will miss her husband, and little Hiền will no longer have a father's hand to hold. Life will keep moving on, but it will never be whole again.

If there is a spiritual world beyond, please watch over and protect your wife and child, Thịnh.

Farewell, my best colleague, Thịnh

"Father, This Afternoon I Am Not Crying"
(Dedicated to Nga and Little Hiền)

Father, oh Father, this afternoon I am not crying,
The mournful rain has quickly passed us by.
A bird perches bewildered on a tender branch,
Gazing as your shadow fades into the distant sky.

Father, oh Father, this afternoon I am not crying,
Though Chopin’s piano music weeping quietly flows.
In the empty room, I look but can not find
That familiar, gentle figure from quiet afternoons.

Father, oh Father, this afternoon I am crying…
Now that you are gone, where will the days lead?
Father, oh Father, this afternoon I am crying…
My heart aches with longing, knowing you are no longer here.

I mention music because Thịnh loved music just as much as soccer. Wherever he went, if he saw a guitar.., he would run over and play a few melodies. Here, I borrow Chopin’s "Prelude in E Minor, Op. 28 No. 4, mentioned in this short poem, to send to Thịnh’s wife and daughter as a cherished memory. It is Chopin's most somber prelude, played at his own funeral according to his final wishes.

I'll never forget the morning almost 33 years ago, when Thinh wrote, "Tin Win" on a piece of paper, so I wouldn't butcher his name. It was a blessing to work with him for 28 years until I had to retire from the CTA. He had boundless energy and I think was the only person I ever had to ask to slow down on a project we were working on. He was always around for those who needed help. I told him I loved him when we talked last Monday, but I thought that there would be many more chances while we worked on him getting healthy again. Lifting his family and friends up in prayers.

We first met Thinh at our girls’ volleyball club 3 years ago, and his light-hearted personality instantly brought our families together. Not just ours but the whole teams families! He was ALWAYS so easy to talk to, immensely personable, humble and charismatic.

Thinh would wake up early to give rides to countless players on the team, arrive early to push the chairs just a little bit for added advantage, and always start the “parent’s high-five” pep rally line before the games.

He was always in the know. He knew where to go, and where to eat….no matter the city. His generosity was contagious.

Thinh made us want to be better and he truly led by example. He was just THAT guy… genuinely good to the core, and what you see is what you get.

What a blessing to have known and been around such a remarkable human being in our lifetime. I am thankful our families paths have crossed. Such little time together, yet a lifelong impact in our lives. Rest in Eternal peace.

Our deepest condolences to you Nga and your family. Our last outing in Chinatown with Manuel, Tessie and family. Such a great time. You all were so welcoming and we enjoyed our time there. Thinh spoke of his retirement and all the things he was doing. Now that he was retired. He was such a pleasure to talk to and so kind. Our prayers and thoughts are with you Nga & MyHien. May we all carry the kindness and welcoming spirit Thinh shared with all who had the chance to know him. May your precious memories confort you .

We had the pleasure of crossing paths last year when our girls played on the same volleyball team. From the very beginning, Thinh stood out for his warm, welcoming, and inclusive nature. He was always the first to offer a ride to anyone who needed one during our time in FL, always brought positive energy, and was beaming with pride as he watched his daughter play.

His kindness and genuine spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him, even if only for a short time.

Nga and Myhein, our hearts are with you during this incredibly difficult time. Wishing you strength, comfort, and peace in the days ahead. We will always remember Thinh’s smile, generosity, and the joy he brought to those around him.
