Green Burials

Green Burials: Leaving The World A Better Place

Midtown Funeral Home and Cremation Options is proud to be counted among select group of funeral homes certified by the Green Burial Council, a nonprofit environmental certification and education organization that sets standards for natural burials in North America.

Why?

In recent years, there has been a strong cultural emphasis on making more sustainable choices in our lifetimes. As a result, there has been an increase in interest in returning to more natural, earth-friendly choices in death care. Funerals are highly personal events, and we are here to provide resources to help you make the choice that truly aligns with your values, ethics, and personal beliefs.

You may be familiar with the term “greenwashing”. This is when companies misleadingly market their goods and services as more environmentally friendly without any evidence to support that claim. Our goal has always been to provide transparency to the families we serve during every step of the funeral planning process. For this reason, we have chosen to pursue certification by a regulatory third party to ensure compliance with standards that facilitate a minimal environmental impact.

What Makes a Burial “Green”?

Green burial is not simply a trend or buzzword; it is a return to funeral practices that humans have been engaging in for millennia. Before concrete vaults, metal caskets, and embalming technology entered the industry, the average burial was simple return to the earth using natural materials and non-toxic sanitation practices.

A true modern green burial provider forgoes formaldehyde-based preservationplaces the deceased in a sustainably made biodegradable casket or burial shroudand arranges for a service at a cemetery that allows burial without use of a concrete vault.

Green Burial Cemeteries

There are three types of cemeteries recognized by the Green Burial Council – Hybrid, Natural, and Conservation.

Hybrid cemeteries are existing conventional cemeteries that allow for green burials, typically within a designated section.

Natural cemeteries are dedicated green burial cemeteries that maintain high standards with regard to limiting their ecological impact.

Conservation cemeteries are dedicated green burial cemeteries that directly aid in the conservation, preservation, and restoration of the land on which they stand.

Our funeral directors can help you determine which choice is best for you from a geographical, ethical, and financial standpoint.
